Mystic Writing Methods: Rumi-Inspired Method Writing Prompts

Step 1: Samā or Deep Listening

One of my favorite writing methods I like to use starts with a process called samā by Rumi. It is a method of deep listening that allows you to first call in your spiritual self and connect with yourself. Today, I began listening to Coleman Barks on YouTube. For many years in the early morning I listened to Rumi poetry during meditation and prayer. I find this practice grounding and uplifting. As I listen, phrases resonate with me and I begin my creative practice with them.

Step 2: Creative Transformation

We live in this night ocean, wondering what are these lights.

-Rumi

We live in this ( - ) , wondering ( - )

You left ground and sky weeping

You left ( - ) (  - )

Step 3: Creative Writing Exercise

These quotes from Rumi provide a wonderful foundation for a creative writing exercise inspired by his poetic style. Rumi often employed metaphors and imagery to convey deep philosophical and emotional themes.

Let's develop these ideas further:

  1. We live in this night ocean, wondering what are these lights. -Rumi

    • Here, Rumi is likely using the "night ocean" as a metaphor for the vast, mysterious expanse of life or the universe, and "these lights" could symbolize hope, guidance, or unanswered questions.
    • Inspired Exercise: "We live in this [metaphor for a vast, unknown space], wondering [something enigmatic or guiding]."
    • Example: "We live in this boundless desert, wondering where the winds whisper secrets."
  2. We live in this ( - ) , wondering ( - )

    • This is an open template inviting you to fill in the blanks with your own metaphors and wonders.
    • Example: "We live in this endless dream, wondering where reality merges."
  3. You left ground and sky weeping

    • This line poetically personifies the ground and sky, suggesting a deep, universal impact of someone's departure or action.
    • Inspired Exercise: "You left [two elements of nature] [emotional reaction]."
    • Example: "You left the mountains and rivers sighing."
  4. You left ( - ) ( - )

    • Another open template to create a line with personification, showing the impact of an action on natural elements.
    • Example: "You left stars and moon dancing."

These exercises draw on Rumi's style of using nature and the cosmos to reflect human emotions and existential questions. The key is to think metaphorically and symbolically, allowing ordinary elements to carry deeper, often unspoken emotional truths.
